Ayo Edebiri Gets Trapped in a Pop Star’s Literal Stan Cult in New ‘Opus’ Trailer
· Rolling StoneAyo Edebiri gets roped into an enigmatic pop star’s wicked games in the new trailer for Opus, which is set to hit theaters on March 14.
The film stars Edebiri as a young journalist named April, who’s summoned to meet Alfred Moretti (John Malkovich), a world-renowned musician who’s returned after a 30-year disappearance with what’s supposedly his greatest work ever. Obviously, though, things aren’t exactly what they seem.
At Moretti’s compound, April finds a cult-like atmosphere where the superstar is surrounded and adored by his devoted, doting stans. What exactly Moretti is cooking up for April and the others remains to be seen, but the clip features all kinds of creepiness: knife-wielding stalkers, doll-like effigies, constant surveillance, invasive grooming demands, and meals of blue-colored lobsters (to match the blue garments everybody wears) served over pickles.
Capping it all off, there’s Moretti himself, with the trailer boasting one wild-looking scene where Malkovich writhes on the floor while squealing, “The crowd is upset! Upset that I’m not on stage! The back row’s asleep — but the front row is ready to rage!”
Along with Edebiri and Malkovich, Opus will star Juliette Lewis, Murray Bartlett, Amber Midthunder, Stephanie Suganami, Young Mazino, and Tatanka Means. The film marks the directorial debut of Mark Anthony Green, who also wrote the screenplay.
Before hitting theaters, Opus will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival later this month on Jan. 27. It’s one of Rolling Stone’s 20 most anticipated films headed to the festival as one of the 50 movies we’re most excited for this year.
