Sony PlayStation announce that there won’t be any new physical discs after January 2028

Sony PlayStation recently announced that production of physical discs would end in “January 2028 for new games releasing on PlayStation consoles”. Any new games will be released in digital format only, either on the PlayStation Store or at other retailers. Previously, GTA VI was also announced with no physical disc, even the box was initially said to just contain the digital version download code.

Why this decision?  

According to PlayStation, this decision to go for just digital formats for new PlayStation games was due to “consumer preference”. This despite the recent backlash from GTA VI fans about the lack of a physical disc. Perhaps this was partially in response to how digital storefronts can so easily get rid of paid-for digital content. It could also mean that physical retail stores may soon disappear completely.
