The world continues to mourn Diane Keaton following the legendary actress’ recent passing at the age of 79. Among those paying their respects to the late star is, perhaps unsurprisingly, David Letterman’s YouTube channel.
The Letterman account routinely posts archival clips of recently-deceased celebrities (often to the confusion of fans). After news of Keaton’s death broke over the weekend, they re-released Keaton’s 1985 appearance on Late Night with David Letterman, in which the Oscar winner professed her newfound love of professional wrestling.

Then they shared a clip of Keaton’s 1987 Late Night segment, which found her promoting her directorial debut Heaven, an experimental documentary exploring humanity’s theories about the afterlife. She even quizzed Letterman about his thoughts on life after death, which he claimed would probably be like a “really big gymnasium” where he’d have “really bad seats.”
Letterman and Keaton’s playful, frequently flirtatious rapport continued two decades later with a 2008 visit to The Late Show. When asked about the 20-year break, Keaton explained that it was probably because Heaven “bombed” at the box office and was torn apart by critics shortly before her Late Night episode. She even worried that she had cried on the show.
“I probably said or did something ugly,” Letterman responded. “That’s usually why nobody comes back. You’re in very good company.”
That night, Letterman couldn’t help but compare Keaton to her role in Woody Allen’s 1977 film Annie Hall. “You are Annie Hall,” the host stated. “I mean, who else could have played that part?”
“I don’t know,” Keaton shot back.
When Letterman asked if she ever watched the movie, Keaton bluntly responded, “No, I don’t watch it. No.”
A lot of people probably don’t watch Annie Hall anymore, owing to the long-standing allegations against Allen. But Keaton, who defended Allen as recently as 2018, seemingly had another reason for staying away from Annie Hall. The First Wives Club star stated in the past that she had “no interest” in revisiting her old films. “I don’t want to look. I’ve seen enough,” she once claimed.
Keaton didn’t even revisit The Godfather until she was asked to participate in a 2017 reunion panel. “I never really paid much attention to The Godfather because I always felt like I was the most outsider, weird person in the movie and ‘Why was I cast, again?’ and I had no voice, but then there was a couple of good scenes with Al,” she explained, calling the movie “astonishing” even though she watched it on a “fucking computer.”
Maybe Annie Hall would hold up better if Allen’s character woke up with a bloody horse head in his bed at some point.
