Scarlett Johansson Confirms It: Colin Jost Is Back at ‘Saturday Night Live’

Colin Jost told a stand-up crowd last week that he was “probably” coming back to Saturday Night Live, but his wife, SNL Five-Timer Scarlett Johansson, removed any doubt over the weekend during a red-carpet appearance at the Toronto International Film Festival. “He’s going back to work,” she confirmed to Entertainment Weekly, likely relieved that Jost won’t be lying around the house during those breaks on Pop Culture Jeopardy.
Does that mean Johansson also will be back as the subject of Jost and Michael Che’s vicious joke swaps on Weekend Update? She says she won’t know until the day before. “I think that's basically the MO over at 30 Rock is that everything is like moments before,” she said. “It’s usually like Friday night before the Saturday show.”
As for the rest of Jost’s castmates? Other than the four departures already announced — Devon Walker, Michael Longfellow, Emil Wakim and Heidi Gardner — everyone else will be back, reports Deadline. Jost’s Update partner Michael Che, the man who can’t stop teasing that he’s halfway out the door, is returning as well. (“i think imma try to be famous this year,” Che posted on his Instagram Story this morning in his typical cryptic fashion.)

That means the Season 51 cast will be even bigger than last year’s bloated cast, with a roster that includes Jost, Che, Mikey Day, Andrew Dismukes, Chloe Fineman, Marcello Hernandez, James Austin Johnson, Ego Nwodim, Sarah Sherman, Kenan Thompson and Bowen Yang, featured players Ashley Padilla, Jane Wickline and new kids Ben Marshall, Tommy Brennan, Jeremy Culhane, Kam Patterson and Veronika Slowikowska.
Darrell Hammond is going to need 10 minutes just to announce that roster. LateNighter did the math, confirming that this won’t be SNL’s biggest roster ever though it’s within shouting distance. Eighteen cast members will compete for stage time this season, tied for third-most in the show’s history. The high-water mark was Seasons 47, when 21 comics clawed for time.
So much for Lorne Michaels’ promised shake-up of the show. While he told Puck that the show would be reinvented, SNL fans can look forward to more of Thompson doing double-takes at Johnson’s Donald Trump impression. Fans on the r/LiveFromNewYork subreddit were unimpressed.
“This is an exceedingly mild shakeup,” wrote one.
“I’m feeling quite whelmed by it,” said another.
“An 18 person cast,” wrote a third. “This is beyond parody.”
Shake-up? Not according to one Redditor: “A wiggle at best.”
