Al Pacino Fondly Remembers His On-Screen and Real-Life Ex Diane Keaton

The comedic actress charmed plenty of hearts, including the Godfather himself

I will not, ever, discuss Woody Allen’s words of memoriam for Diane Keaton. I have selective literacy when it comes to his quotes in the media, and I choose not to internalize any way he’s chosen to memorialize his muse of yore. But Keaton was a woman loved by many, and fortunately, better men have better words to say about her passing.

According to Deadline, Al Pacino has shared his thoughts about his former co-star and love. Those words merit more reading.

“I am deeply saddened by Diane Keaton’s passing,” Pacino wrote, exclusively for Deadline

“When I first heard the news, I was shaken. Diane was my partner, my friend, someone who brought me happiness and on more than one occasion influenced the direction of my life,” the Godfather star continued. “Though over thirty years has past since we were together, the memories remain vivid, and with her passing, they have returned with a force that is both painful and moving.”

Keaton passed away on October 11, 2025 from pneumonia. During her lifetime, she was one of a very few actors who won an Oscar for a comedic role, and left an indelible mark on the rom-com genre with her exuberant, messy, hilarious and unforgettable roles in movies like The Family Stone and Something’s Gotta Give. Pacino and Keaton dated off and on for over a decade between 1971 and 1987.

“She lived without limits, and everything she touched carried her unmistakable energy,” Pacino wrote for Deadline. “She opened doors for others, inspired generations and embodied a once-in-a-lifetime gift that radiated through her work and her life. On screen, she was magnetic — lightning and charm, hurricanes and tenderness. She was a wonder. Acting was her art, but it was only one of the many ways she expressed her imagination and creativity.”

Since the news of her passing, Pacino has also expressed regret that he never married Keaton. “People will miss her, but more than that, they will remember her. She left a mark that cannot fade. She was unstoppable, resilient and above all, deeply human,” he concluded his statement about her death. “She could fly — and in my heart, she always will.”

Keaton herself expressed gratitude on a regular basis that she didn’t ever get married. In an interview with ABC News in 1996, she explained, “I think I never got married because I didn’t want to get married. I didn’t choose to get married and the people that I was with, it was best that we were not married. I did the right thing.”
