Actor Kangana Ranaut on Friday reacted to the Gurdwara Committee seeking a ban on her film Emergency in Punjab. She shared a post on X, calling the move 'complete harassment of art and the artiste'.
The 38-year-old re-shared the post made by Sukhpal Singh Khaira, MLA, Bholath, in which he advocated the ban on film. Kangana, who is also a BJP MLA from Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, mentioned that she 'respects all religions'. The actor further cited her growing up years in Chandigarh.
She wrote, "This is complete harassment of art and the artist, from Punjab, many cities are reporting that these people are not allowing Emergency to be screened (sic)."
She added, "I have utmost respect for all religions and after studying and growing up in Chandigarh I have closely observed and followed Sikh religion. This is a complete lie and propaganda to tarnish my image and harm my film #Emergency (sic)."
On Thursday, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Harjinder Singh Dhami wrote a letter to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann demanding a post-release ban on the movie in the state. The committee also protested across the state against the screening of the film.
In his letter to Mann, Dhami wrote against the release of Emergency in the state, and mentioned that "If the movie is released on January 17, it would enrage the Sikh world, which is natural (sic)." The letter further accused the makers of the film of 'spreading venom' and furthering 'an anti-Sikh agenda'.
While the government has not reacted to the demands of SGPC yet, theatre owners in Punjab have decided not to screen the film following the protests.
Emergency, which is directed and written by Kangana, also features Anupam Kher, Vishak Nair, Shreyas Talpade, Milind Soman and the late Satish Koushik. The film highlights the political events in India between 1975-1977 when Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared an 'emergency' in the country.
