Actor Mahesh Babu and director SS Rajamouli’s highly-anticipated collaboration, tentatively titled 'SSMB 29', has been making headlines since its announcement, with speculation swirling about its story, setting, and scale. The film, mounted on a massive scale, is reportedly rooted in Indian history, blending mythological elements with a connection to Kashi, the sacred city of Lord Shiva.
According to a Pinkvilla report, the film’s core conflict is deeply tied to the history of Kashi (modern-day Varanasi), with mythological references to Lord Shiva shaping an unforgettable adventure in the present. The makers are reportedly recreating the ancient city of Kashi on an elaborate set in Hyderabad.
Rajamouli has always expressed his fascination for mythology, which is evident in most of his films. This trend is expected to continue in 'SSMB29', which is reportedly titled Garuda. The film will reportedly follow Rajamouli’s signature hybrid format, combining real forest locations with elaborate sets depicting monumental Indian landmarks.
Some reports also suggest that the film draws inspiration from the Hindu epic Ramayana, mirroring Lord Hanuman’s quest for Sanjeevani (a medicinal mountain with healing properties as mentioned in the Ramayana). Similarly, the hero is expected to embark on a high-stakes journey, blending history, mythology, and adventure, heightening anticipation around the film.
The team is currently filming at Talamali Hilltop in Koraput, Odisha. The cast includes Mahesh Babu in the lead, with Prithviraj Sukumaran and Priyanka Chopra playing key roles. However, apart from Mahesh Babu’s involvement, no official confirmation has been made regarding the cast, crew, or storyline.
Meanwhile, challenges have emerged due to leaked visuals from the outdoor shoot going viral on social media, prompting the team to tighten security with a three-layer system and local administrative support. Priyanka Chopra is set to join the shoot on March 11, where key forest sequences are being filmed.
With Rajamouli’s proven expertise in handling mythological themes, expectations are high for 'SSMB29' to become one of the biggest Indian films ever.
