Fans hoping to reunite with Sachin and Reenu will have to wait a little longer. Actor Naslen has confirmed that Premalu 2, the much-awaited sequel to the 2024 Malayalam blockbuster, has been shelved for now after the makers failed to arrive at a script they were fully satisfied with.

While the update comes as a disappointment for fans, Naslen clarified that the sequel has not been abandoned permanently and could still happen in the future if the team finds the right story. Premalu 2 was supposed to hit theatres in 2025.

Speaking to Club FM, the actor said the makers ultimately decided against moving forward because the screenplay did not meet their creative expectations.

"Premalu 2 has officially been cancelled. Dileesh ettan (brother) has already spoken about it. Due to certain technical reasons, the project did not reach a perfect landing. Maybe it could happen in the future. But as of now, it has been cancelled. The project was stopped because the script did not achieve the required perfection," he said.

The comments echo earlier remarks by producer Dileesh Pothan, who had indicated that the future of the sequel remained uncertain.

Directed by Girish AD, Premalu was jointly produced by Bhavana Studios, Fahadh Faasil and Friends, and Working Class Hero. The film starred Naslen and Mamitha Baiju in the lead roles, alongside Sangeeth Prathap, Akhila Bhargavan, Shyam Mohan, Meenakshi Raveendran, Mathew Thomas and Althaf Salim.

Released in 2024, Premalu emerged as one of the biggest Malayalam success stories of the year. The film went on to cross the Rs 100 crore mark at the box office.

Set in Hyderabad, the romantic comedy struck a chord with audiences through its relatable characters, easy-going humour and contemporary take on young love. The story followed Sachin, a recent graduate from Kerala whose plans to move to the UK fall apart. He eventually heads to Hyderabad for GATE coaching, where he meets Reenu, setting off a charming coming-of-age romance that resonated with viewers across languages.

Following the film's blockbuster run, a sequel was announced, sparking excitement among fans eager to see where Sachin and Reenu's story would go next. However, updates remained scarce in the months that followed, fuelling speculation about delays and creative hurdles.
