Actor Madhuri Dixit dismissed a recent claim that she was pregnant while shooting the song Dola Re Dola from Devdas. The actor responded after Rubina Khan, a former associate of late choreographer Saroj Khan, said on a podcast that Madhuri was four months pregnant during the filming of the song.
Speaking to SCREEN, Madhuri gave a brief reply and pointed to the dates. Her elder son, Arin Nene, was born on March 17, 2003. Meanwhile, Devdas was released in theatres on July 12, 2002, after premiering at the Cannes Film Festival in May that year.
Madhuri’s response to the pregnancy claim
“Arin is born in 2003. So, you do the math,” Madhuri said, while calling the filming of the song "physically exhausting".
The actor shared that said she was travelling frequently between India and the US during that period and was not in the best condition while shooting.
“I was under the weather because I was travelling a lot. I was going back and forth, shooting here and going back. And all my shoots were night shoots. So, for me, it was very gruelling. I was a little under the weather, but nothing like that,” she said.
How the claim surfaced
The discussion began after Rubina Khan spoke about the making of Dola Re Dola on the YouTube channel Bollywood Thikana.
Recalling one part of the choreography, she said, “There's a step in which Madhuri ma'am turns and sits down. That shot kept happening from 9 am to 10 pm because she was four months pregnant. So, she couldn't turn properly and was feeling dizzy.”
Devdas and the song Dola Re Dola
Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Devdas starred Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai and Madhuri Dixit. Madhuri played Chandramukhi in the film. Dola Re Dola, choreographed by Saroj Khan, brought Madhuri and Aishwarya together on screen in a dance sequence that continues to be remembered by fans more than two decades later.
After marrying Dr Shriram Nene in 1999, Madhuri moved to the US. Devdas was among the last films she completed before taking a break to focus on family life. Apart from Arin, Madhuri and Dr Nene also have another son, Ryan, who was born in 2005.
Madhuri's upcoming project
Madhuri is now promoting her upcoming Netflix comedy-thriller Maa Behan, which also stars Triptii Dimri, Dharna Durgaa and Ravi Kishan. The film is directed by Suresh Triveni, known for Tumhari Sulu, Jalsa and Subedaar.
The trailer shows Madhuri as a single mother, with Triptii and Dharna playing her daughters, as the family deals with a man dying in their home. Produced by Abundantia Entertainment Production in association with Opening Image Films, the film is set to release on Netflix on June 4.
