The southwest monsoon is set to advance further across parts of India on Tuesday, June 23, bringing heavy rainfall to several eastern, northeastern and southern states, while heatwave conditions continue in parts of central and northern India.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), conditions remain favourable for the monsoon to move into more parts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, as well as the remaining areas of Telangana, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Bihar over the next 48 hours.

The monsoon made further progress on Monday, June 22, advancing across parts of central and eastern India after a sluggish start in several regions.

HEAVY RAINFALL ACROSS INDIA

The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated places over Assam and Meghalaya and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim.

Heavy rainfall is also likely over Bihar, Odisha, Telangana, Arunachal Pradesh, coastal regions of Karnataka, Kerala, Konkan and Goa, parts of Maharashtra and several northeastern states.

Rainfall activity is expected to remain active along the west coast, where the monsoon has strengthened in recent days.

Telangana is likely to witness fairly widespread rainfall, with the IMD also forecasting heavy rain over the state during much of the coming week.

The weather agency has also warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph at isolated places over Bihar, Jharkhand, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Telangana, Delhi, Haryana and Punjab.

Even as monsoon rains spread across large parts of the country, pockets of intense heat persisted.

Banda in Uttar Pradesh was the hottest place in the plains, recording a maximum temperature of 42.6°C.

In contrast, Haflong in Assam recorded the lowest minimum temperature in the plains at 17°C, highlighting the sharp divide between rain-soaked northeastern states and heatwave-hit regions of central India.

CENTRAL INDIA STILL WITHOUT RELIEF

While rain-bearing monsoon winds continue to spread across much of the country, heatwave conditions are expected to persist in isolated pockets of East Madhya Pradesh, East Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

The contrasting weather pattern highlights the uneven nature of the monsoon's advance, a common feature during the early stages of the rainy season.

With the monsoon steadily expanding its footprint across India, weather conditions are expected to remain active through the week, bringing a mix of heavy rain, thunderstorms and lingering heat across different regions.
