Rajinikanth’s upcoming film ‘Coolie’, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, has been awarded an A certificate - marking a rare shift for the superstar whose films typically draw audiences across age groups. This makes ‘Coolie’ the first Rajinikanth film in years to receive such a rating, signalling the film’s intense and unfiltered action.
Director Lokesh Kanagaraj has been vocal about his creative direction, stating that there would be “no compromises on violence and action” in the film. His vision stays true to the narrative, with high-octane action sequences forming the spine of the storyline.

Produced by Kalanithi Maran under the Sun Pictures banner, ‘Coolie’ boasts a stellar ensemble cast including Nagarjuna, Sathyaraj, Upendra, Shruti Haasan, and Soubin Shahir, with Rajinikanth leading as Deva.
A special highlight is Aamir Khan’s cameo as Dahaa - marking his on-screen reunion with Rajinikanth 29 years after ‘Aatank Hi Aatank’, and the superstar’s first collaboration with Sathyaraj in 38 years since ‘Mr Bharath’.
The technical crew includes Girish Gangadharan as the cinematographer, Philomin Raj as editor, and stunt direction by the Anbariv duo - promising a stylised action experience.
‘Coolie’ is set to release on August 14 in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, and Kannada. Adding to the buzz, the trailer and audio launch are slated for August 2 at Chennai’s Nehru Indoor Stadium. Sun Pictures has officially confirmed the event, further fuelling fan excitement around one of the most anticipated films of 2025.
Meanwhile, Rajinikanth is currently on a short break from filming ‘Jailer 2’, helmed by Nelson Dilipkumar. The sequel to the 2023 blockbuster is expected to hit theatres in the first half of 2026.
