The makers of Karisma Kapoor’s upcoming series Brown unveiled its trailer on Saturday, May 30, offering a look at the murder mystery set in Kolkata. Directed by Abhinay Deo, the series stars Karisma in the lead, with Jisshu Sengupta, Surya Sharma, Soni Razdan and Ajinkya Deo in pivotal roles.
The show centres on Rita Brown, a troubled police officer investigating the high-profile murder of a teenager. Adapted from the book City of Death by Abheek Barua, the series follows Rita as she takes on the case while dealing with her own psychological struggles. Brown will premiere on ZEE5 on June 5.
What the trailer shows
The trailer shows Karisma as Rita investigating the case with her junior, Arjun, played by Surya Sharma. Jisshu Sengupta appears as a psychiatrist who seems to hold key information. The mystery deepens after another murder rocks the city, pushing the investigation into darker territory.
Brown is presented as a dark and gritty investigative thriller, with Rita placed in a grim and emotionally charged world. She is shown as determined but deeply affected by what she is facing, with the trailer suggesting her inner turmoil through scenes of smoking, drinking and taking pills. Soni Razdan plays Rita’s mother in a significant role, adding a family layer to the central story, while the supporting cast expands the world around the investigation.
What the cast said
Speaking about the series, Karisma said in a statement, “Rita Brown is unlike any character I’ve played before. She is flawed, vulnerable, emotionally bruised, yet incredibly resilient in the way she keeps moving forward despite everything life throws at her." She added that what drew her to Brown was the emotional honesty of the writing.
"There’s no attempt to glamorise pain or simplify human relationships,” Karisma added.
Jisshu also spoke about the writing in the show. He said, “What I enjoyed about Brown is that it keeps unfolding layer by layer. There’s suspense, but there’s also a lot of emotional depth in the writing, which makes it feel more personal than just a conventional thriller. As an actor, those are the worlds I have always enjoyed being part of.”
Karisma's previous stint on OTT
Produced by Zee Studios, Brown marks Karisma’s return to an acting project after nearly two years. Her last release was Netflix’s Murder Mubarak (2024). Though she is often seen as a judge on reality shows, she has remained selective about films and web series in recent years. The series will also be her second OTT project after Mentalhood (2020), which received a positive response from viewers.
