If you’ve been waiting to stream Project Hail Mary at home, you may have to wait a little longer. The makers have confirmed that the film will remain a theatrical-exclusive for now, with no immediate plans for a streaming release.

Co-director Christopher Miller shared the update on X, revealing that Amazon MGM Studios has extended the film’s exclusive theatrical window. Emphasising the scale of the project, he noted that the film is designed for the big-screen experience, particularly with its return to IMAX screens for a limited run.

“This is a movie that needs to be seen on a big screen (sic),” Miller wrote, encouraging audiences to catch it in theatres with friends and family.

Here's the post:

Starring Ryan Gosling and Sandra Huller, Project Hail Mary is based on Andy Weir’s 2021 novel of the same name. It follows a school teacher-turned-astronaut tasked with saving the sun from a mysterious threat. Since its release in March, the film has performed strongly at the global box office, reportedly earning over $517 million worldwide.

The move stands out at a time when many films arrive on premium video-on-demand platforms within weeks of release. For instance, Scream 7 became available for home viewing just over a month after its theatrical debut.

A section of IndiaToday's review of the film read, "The film walks a fine line between spectacle and sincerity. It is, on the surface, about a dying sun and humanity’s last gamble. But beneath that, it is about connection: who we trust, who we become in crisis, and what it means to not be alone at the end of everything."

For now, Project Hail Mary remains firmly a big-screen experience.
