Jana Nayagan director on film delay: I don't have the courage to reveal the truth

The release date of Jana Nayagan remains one of Tamil cinema's biggest unanswered questions, and director H Vinoth isn't offering any easy answers. Asked about the long-delayed film at a recent promotional event, the filmmaker responded with a cryptic remark, saying he did not have the "courage" to reveal what had happened behind the scenes.

Starring Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay, Mamitha Baiju, Bobby Deol and Pooja Hegde, Jana Nayagan has reportedly been awaiting certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) for over five months.

What did H Vinoth say about Jana Nayagan delay?

The question of Jana Nayagan's delay came up during a promotional event for director Pandiraj's upcoming film Parimala & Co. Vinoth was joined by filmmakers Pa Ranjith and Pandiraj, choreographer Sandy Master and actor Santhosh during the discussion on SS Music.

During the interaction, the anchor asked the question many Vijay fans have been waiting to hear answered: "Tamil Nadu has already asked you this question; now I'm asking it too. When can we expect Jana Nayagan to release?"

As the audience erupted in cheers, Vinoth replied with a smile, "That is not up to me. I don't even have the courage to tell you the truth. Even if I had the courage, you wouldn't have the courage to share it."

His response drew laughter from those on stage, including Ranjith and Santhosh, but it also reignited speculation about the film's prolonged delay.

Why is Vijay's final film, Jana Nayagan, not releasing?

The uncertainty has only grown in recent weeks. Fans were briefly excited after ticketing platform BookMyShow listed Jana Nayagan for a June release, while another platform reportedly mentioned June 19 as a potential date. The listings led to speculation that the film could arrive around Vijay's 52nd birthday on June 22.

However, producer Venkat K Narayana of KVN Productions has indicated that the film is yet to receive CBFC certification.

Tamil Nadu Minister for Film Technology and Cinematograph Act, Rajmohan Arumugam, recently addressed the issue as well. He stated that the film could be released only after receiving censor certification and stressed that no film could be delayed for political or extraneous reasons if all legal requirements had been met.

Jana Nayagan was originally expected to hit theatres during the Pongal season in January, months ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. However, its release was postponed after certification-related complications reportedly emerged at the last minute. Following an objection from a member of the examining committee, the film was referred to the revising committee, delaying the process further.

Producer Venkat K Narayana later approached the courts seeking relief, but the matter remained unresolved. In another setback, portions of the film surfaced online in April, leading to multiple arrests.
