In light of the deadly wildfires in Los Angeles, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has extended the Oscar nomination voting window. According to Variety, voting for the nearly 10,000 Academy members, which began on January 8, was initially set to close on January 12. However, the deadline has now been pushed to January 14, with the nominations' announcement now set for January 19.
The Academy sent an email to members on January 8 detailing the date changes from CEO Bill Kramer.
“We want to offer our deepest condolences to those who have been impacted by the devastating fires across Southern California. So many of our members and industry colleagues live and work in the Los Angeles area, and we are thinking of you,” the email read.
The email also outlined additional scheduling changes: The International Feature Shortlist Screening, originally scheduled for Wednesday night in Los Angeles, has been postponed to later in the week. The in-person Los Angeles Sound Branch Bake-Off and Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Branch Bake-Offs in both Los Angeles and New York City, set for January 11, have been canceled.
The 2025 Oscars ceremony, hosted by Conan O'Brien, will take place on March 2.
Meanwhile, at least five people have died as out-of-control wildfires continue to rage across Los Angeles, leaving a trail of widespread destruction and residents being forced out of their homes. Meanwhile, a new blaze dubbed the Sunset fire, has erupted in the Hollywood Hills, home to the iconic Hollywood sign.
According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, Sunset fire's current size has increased to 20 acres and is burning between Runyon Canyon and Wattles Park.
Besides the iconic Hollywood sign, the Dolby Theatre, where the Oscar Awards ceremony is held annually, is also being threatened by the Sunset Fire.
