The demon-fighting K-pop idols of KPop Demon Hunters are not done yet. Riding high on global popularity, Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation have confirmed that a sequel to the hit animated film is officially in development.
The announcement arrives just days before the original film is expected to be recognised at the Oscars. Directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, who helmed the first instalment, will return to lead the sequel as part of a new multi-year deal with the streaming platform.
Released on Netflix, KPop Demon Hunters quickly became one of the platform’s most-watched films. The story followed fictional K-pop group Huntrix, whose chart-topping music doubles as a secret weapon to protect the world from demonic forces. Its blend of high-energy music, stylised animation and fantasy storytelling helped the film build a passionate global fanbase.
Sony Pictures Animation is backing the sequel alongside Netflix. While a release date has not yet been confirmed, the project remains in early development, making earlier speculation about a 2029 release unlikely. Production is expected to begin once the current awards season concludes.
The film’s streaming success has also sparked conversations within Hollywood about whether it might have performed even better with a theatrical release. However, insiders at Sony Pictures Animation believe the Netflix launch allowed the film time to find its audience – something that may have been harder to achieve in cinemas.
With the sequel now officially underway, fans can expect the story of Huntrix, and their demon-fighting adventures, to grow even bigger in the years ahead.
