The event also marked 25 years of Lagaan and brought together several guests from the film industry. Salman was among the prominent attendees, and his appearance quickly became one of the talking points from the evening.
Salman was first seen posing solo for photographers in his usual style. Later, Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor joined him for pictures. While Salman and Aamir were both dressed in black, Kareena wore a pink suit. Their appearance together was among the highlights of the celebration.
Several celebrities attended the celebration, including filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani and members of the Lagaan cast. Kiran Rao and Aamir Khan's son Azad were also present. Aamir was seen posing with his fiance Gauri Spratt, whom he is set to marry on July 15.
Why the event mattered
The celebrations were also linked to Lagaan, one of the most recognised films associated with Aamir Khan. Released in 2001 and directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India went on to become a landmark film in Indian cinema. The period drama was successful in India and also received international acclaim, including an Academy Award nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film category.
Set in colonial India in 1893, the film followed a group of villagers who challenged their British rulers to a game of cricket in a bid to avoid oppressive taxes. The story connected with audiences across the world. The film featured an ensemble cast that included Gracy Singh, Rachel Shelley, Paul Blackthorne, Suhasini Mulay, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Raghubir Yadav, Yashpal Sharma and Amin Hajee, among others.
Another enduring part of the film remains its soundtrack by A R Rahman. Songs such as Ghanan Ghanan, Mitwa, Radha Kaise Na Jale and O Rey Chhori continue to have a loyal following. The film has also been re-released in theatres, with shows available till June 14.
What is Salman Khan up to nowadays?
Salman’s appearance at the event came days after he attended the funeral of close family friend Kumod Raney. Videos and photographs from the final rites had shown him visibly emotional. He was joined there by members of his family, including Salma Khan, Helen, Sohail Khan and Arpita Khan Sharma.
On the professional front, Salman will be seen in Maatrubhumi: May War Rest in Peace. He is also shooting for Vamshi Paidipally’s upcoming film, tentatively titled SVC63, co-starring Nayanthara.
