Actor Yami Gautam’s horror-comedy Nayyi Navelli has opened to a slow response at the Indian box office, collecting an estimated Rs 3.25 crore on its first day in theatres, according to early estimates by trade website Sacnilk. Despite the horror-comedy genre offering scope for a bigger opening, the film has recorded a modest start.

The film performed relatively better at non-national chains, possibly owing to the rooted setting showcased in its trailer. As per Sacnilk, the film opened to Rs 3.25 crore nett at the Indian box office. It recorded the collection across 6,281 shows, taking its India gross to Rs 3.83 crore.

Overseas, the film has earned Rs 75 lakh in gross collections so far, taking its worldwide gross to Rs 4.58 crore. While the film registered a modest opening, its weekend performance will be crucial in determining its box-office trajectory.

The film faces competition at the box office from Rajkummar Rao’s Prahaar: The Ujjwal Nikam Story.

Nayyi Navelli revolves around the arrival of a seemingly perfect bride in a chaotic household in Meerut. However, her brother-in-law begins to suspect that she may be a supernatural daayan, setting the stage for a blend of comedy, family drama and fantasy. The film stars Yami Gautam alongside Adinath M. Kothare, Anurag Thakur and others.

IndiaToday.in’s review of the film reads, “At its heart, Nayyi Navelli has an appealing idea. It has a promising lead performance and a supporting actor who knows how to make a scene work. But a good premise can only take a film so far. The first half makes you curious about where the story is headed; the second half makes you wish it had found a more convincing way to get there.”

Directed by Balaji Mohan, Nayyi Navelli released in theatres on October 16.
