The teaser of Ramayana Part 1, directed by Nitesh Tiwari, has triggered a wide range of reactions ever since its release, with audiences divided over its visuals and casting. As the film gears up for a Diwali 2026 release, veteran actor Sunil Lahri, who played Lakshman in Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan, has now shared his perspective on Ranbir Kapoor stepping into the role of Lord Rama.

Speaking to DNA, Lahri offered a measured response to Ranbir’s portrayal, pointing out certain qualities he felt were missing while still expressing confidence in the actor’s abilities.

He said, "Ranbir looks OK, but the innocence is a little less. The patience, calm, and innocence Arun (Govil) had are missing here. But I'm sure he'll justify the role with his acting."

He also spoke about the casting choice more broadly, suggesting that a fresher face might have suited the role better.

The actor said, "He looks a little harsh; he suits more for Laxmana or Bharat. For such a role, it's always better to cast a fresh face. A new actor, with no image or controversy, is always an ideal match."

Lahri’s comments come at a time when discussions around the film are already gaining momentum online. His association with the original Ramayan, which aired between 1987 and 1988 and remains one of the most widely watched shows in Indian television history, adds context to his views.

The upcoming film, however, continues to generate curiosity for its scale and casting. Apart from Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, the project stars Yash as Ravana, Sai Pallavi as Sita and Sunny Deol as Hanuman. The teaser has also hinted at Ranbir taking on a dual appearance, with a brief role as Lord Parshurama.

Backed by producer Namit Malhotra, Ramayana is envisioned as a two-part cinematic saga, with the first instalment arriving in theatres during Diwali 2026 and the second planned for Diwali 2027.
