Global icon Priyanka Chopra Jonas has joined the short film Anuja as an executive producer. The film, which won the Live Action Short award at the 2024 HollyShorts Film Festival, has been shortlisted for the 2025 Oscars in the Live Action Short Film category.
Directed by Adam J Graves and produced by Suchitra Mattai, Anuja tells the story of a nine-year-old girl working in a back-alley garment factory alongside her older sister, Palak. The film explores her journey as she confronts a life-altering decision that could shape her family's future.
Variety quoted Priyanka Chopra as saying, “This beautiful film shines a spotlight on a subject that affects millions of children worldwide, who are faced with the impossible decision between a future they cannot yet see and the immediate realities of their present. Anuja is a poignant, thought-provoking piece that makes us reflect deeply on the power of choices and how they shape the course of our lives. I am immensely proud to be associated with such a phenomenal and impactful project.”
Mattai expressed her joy of seeing Priyanka onboard for the film. While talking about the same, she said, "Priyanka’s faith in the power of Anuja’s story means a lot to us, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to have her join our team."
Director Graves added, "She brings so much to the table not only as a world-class talent but as an advocate for the rights of children and girls across the globe,” Graves added. “Her involvement will supercharge Anuja’s’ global impact."
The film was created in partnership with the Salaam Baalak Trust (SBT), a nonprofit founded by Mira Nair’s family to support street and working children. The film is also backed by Shine Global, the production house behind the Academy Award-winning films War/Dance (2007) and Inocente (2012), as well as Krushan Naik Films. Among its producers are Mindy Kaling and Oscar-winner Guneet Monga Kapoor.
