Indian cricket team is preparing for the possible departure of two of its biggest stars, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, from Test cricket. Rohit was reportedly told by the BCCI that he no longer figured in the plan of the team in Test cricket much before he made the announcement recently. This follows Rohit’s disappointing performance during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where he even removed himself from the Sydney Test.

Shubman Gill is said to be the front-runner to take over the captaincy from Rohit, having picked up rich form and captaincy acumen in the IPL with the Gujarat Titans. He has already been appointed vice-captain for T20Is and ODIs.

At the same time, Virat Kohli has apparently informed the BCCI that he wants to retire from Test cricket, but the board has requested him to reconsider, particularly given that the England tour is upcoming. Nonetheless, the BCCI appears reticent to interfere with Kohli’s decision, recognizing that retirement is a personal choice.

Kohli has enjoyed a distinguished Test career, taking India to numerous classic wins and two World Test Championship finals. Though they lost both, his record in the game remains substantial. If both Rohit and Kohli retire, it would be a major change for Indian cricket, with new blood and leadership set to emerge.
