Metal Gear Solid movie on the way
by Rob Beschizza · Boing BoingIn 1998, Hideo Kojima's Metal Gear Solid brought cinematic action to the original Sony PlayStation, and now Hollywood is returning the favor. Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein are to film a blockbuster based on the game.
Regarding Metal Gear Solid, the duo stated, "Metal Gear Solid was nothing short of a groundbreaking cinematic masterpiece that forever revolutionized video games. We are thrilled and honored to bring Hideo Kojima's iconic characters and unforgettable world to life."
With Final Destination: Bloodlines, Lipovsky and Stein reinvigorated a moribund Warners Bros. title, helming the first Final Destination movie in about 14 years. The movie, released in May 2025, grossed $317.0 million worldwide on a budget of around $50 million, becoming not only the highest-grossing entry in the franchise but also the best reviewed.
I hope they don't improve the dialog at all. I vaguely remember extensive sections of the game where Solid Snake would simply repeat everything said to him in a gruffly curious tone of voice. If you told him that we're having chicken provençal braised in white wine with black olives and plump cherry tomatoes for dinner, he would say "Chicken provençal braised in white wine with black olives and plump cherry tomatoes…for dinner?" This is apparently a sign of excessively literal translation from Japanese, where repetition may represent formal acknowledgement, not evidence of brain damage.
Lipovsky and Stein are currently working on Gremlins 3, with Chris Columbus (who wrote the original) directing.
