The mystery behind that spooky desert statue has finally been solved

Do you remember that spooky gaming-related obelisk that appeared in the California desert unannounced? After a week of intense speculation, poring over every lovingly crafted detail, the answer to its mystery was finally revealed at The Game Awards, and I guarantee it's one you didn't see coming.

In a long, lavish reveal trailer featuring a whole festival of revelers unfortunate enough to get melted into that obelisk, which we now know is called the Hellstone, Baldur's Gate 3 devs Larian Studios revealed their next title: Divinity. Warning: the trailer is NSFW, even for an M-rated game.

While Larian will, of course, be known to most for Baldur's Gate 3, the Divinity series was their baby long before they ever laid hands on the D&D IP. The most recent entry in that series, the excellent Divinity: Original Sin 2, was functionally a pitch for Baldur's Gate 3 that evidently paid off.

The prospect of Larian now returning to their own original universe with all the experience they've gained from assembling one of the best RPGs ever made is an exciting one, especially given that this game is apparently going to be "even bigger" than BG3. If you haven't played a Divinity before, don't worry — the simple title Divinity, no subtitles or qualifiers, seems to indicate that this will be a reboot of sorts, approachable for new players. If you have played a Divinity before, start counting down the seconds.
