HBO's Lanterns trailer goes heavy on the green light
by Séamus Bellamy · Boing BoingWhen the first teaser for HBO's upcoming Lanterns series was released, a lot of fans griped about the lack of power ring use. Fair enough: the ring is both a weapon and badge of authority for the DC Universe's corps of space cops. I frigging loved it. It took me back to my favorite run of the series, when it was relaunched in the 1990s. In the early issues of volume three, Hal Jordan had returned to hitchhiking across America, trying to use the ring as little as possible, in an attempt to reconnect with the man he used to be. For a teen trying to sort out his hormone-driven bullshit, it was powerful stuff.
But it looks like HBO listened to the complaints about the first peek at the series and made a course correction: there's less True Detective and more willpower-driven hard light shenanigans. After being deeply injured by seeing Ryan Reynolds' Green Lantern flick at the theatre, I'm feeling hopeful for this series. It's looking solid, grounded and smart. We'll all have a chance to find out whether it's a win or a wash when Lanterns hits HBO in August.
