Srinagar, Dec 25: The Christmas spirit was alive and vibrant across Kashmir on Monday as families, friends, and faith communities came together to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, marking the occasion with prayers for peace.

The festive atmosphere was especially felt at the Holy Family Catholic Church at M A Road, Srinagar, which stood beautifully illuminated and decorated for the occasion.

Devotees from all walks of life, Christians as well as from other religions, gathered in large numbers to join in the celebration of love, peace, and unity that defines Christmas.

The church was a beacon of festive cheer, as children sang Christmas carols, and the ringing of bells filled the air.

The decorations, including twinkling lights and a large nativity scene added to the joyous ambience. Joseph Thomas, one of the attendees, said that this year’s celebration feels special.

“The decorations are beautiful and the participation of people from different communities truly embodies the spirit of Christmas,” he said.

“Christmas is a time to reflect on the values of love, compassion, and unity. We are grateful to all those who have made this celebration possible,” a group of people who had gathered at the church said.

The prayer focused on peace and harmony, with many people voicing prayers for the J&K’s prosperity and well-being.

Throughout the day, there was a sense of togetherness, as residents from across Kashmir participated in the festivities.

The devotees expressed their appreciation for the seamless coordination between the local administration and security forces.

“The arrangements by the administration are exceptional, and the peaceful environment today is thanks to their efforts,” they said.

The festive mood extended beyond the church grounds.

In the streets of Srinagar and other parts of Kashmir, decorative lights were strung across streets and shops, bringing an extra sparkle to the wintery nights.

What made this year’s celebrations particularly significant was the unity demonstrated by the various communities across Kashmir.

As much as Christmas is a time of religious observance for Christians, it has increasingly become a time for people from all faiths to join in the spirit of togetherness.

The cross-community participation is a reflection of Kashmir’s religious tolerance and harmony.

The celebrations will continue throughout the week.

Christmas Eve services were conducted in several churches on Tuesday night, with many churches holding special prayer services on Wednesday morning.

While the celebrations in Srinagar took centre stage, Christmas was also celebrated at the hill stations of Gulmarg and Pahalgam to the far-flung areas of Kupwara and Shopian.

Kashmir’s churches, adorned with lights and festive decorations, opened their doors to people of all faiths, creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for everyone.
