Ryan Gosling in Talks to Star in Shawn Levy’s ‘Star Wars’ Movie
Levy's film has been in development for years and is reportedly a standalone film not part of the Skywalker Saga.
by Brian Welk · IndieWireRyan Gosling is in talks to star in a new “Star Wars” film, this one from director Shawn Levy, according to multiple media reports, representing one of the first major developments in the feature film plans for the “Star Wars” brand.
Levy’s project has been in development for years — all the way back to 2022 — with others being added to the overall slate since then. But with Gosling potentially joining the galaxy far, far away, it’s a big shot in the arm to the franchise and makes it likely this would be the next feature film to go.
Lucasfilm and reps for Gosling did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
For this one, Jonathan Tropper is writing the script, reuniting with Levy and his 21 Laps production banner after working together on “This Is Where I Leave You” and “The Adam Project.” But it’s unclear what era in the “Star Wars” timeline this film is set, whom he would be playing, or any other details. Levy’s film is however reportedly meant to be separate from the Skywalker Saga of stories, which would potentially involve the return of Daisy Ridley as Rey.
The next “Star Wars” feature on the horizon, the first since 2019’s “The Rise of Skywalker,” would be “The Mandalorian & Grogu,” the spinoff of the popular Disney+ series starring Pedro Pascal. Other projects in development include one from James Mangold, another from Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, a new trilogy from Simon Kinberg, and other projects from Taika Waititi and Dave Filoni all in development.
Who knows when this project would come to the screen though. Disney had originally staked a flag for December 2026 for a new “Star Wars” film but recently bumped it and replaced it with “Ice Age 6.” The next untitled “Star Wars” film currently on the Disney theatrical slate is for December 2027. “The Mandalorian & Grogu” will still open May 2026.
Gosling starred last year in “The Fall Guy” and has another ambitious sci-fi on his slate for 2026, “Project Hail Mary” from directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, whom once upon a time were meant to direct the Han Solo prequel film before Ron Howard took over.
