Rhea Seehorn Wins Emmy for Lead Actress in a Drama Series

The "Pluribus" star finally broke an Emmy shutout streak that lasted for the entirety of "Better Call Saul."

“Better Call Saul” fans, rejoice: Rhea Seehorn is finally an Emmy winner. The “Pluribus” star won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series at the 78th Primetime Emmys for her performance in Season 1 of the Apple TV show.

In addition to thanking her collaborators, Seehorn used her speech to highlight the other nominees, mentioning that “The Diplomat” star Keri Russell previously sent her a card featuring a Gloria Steinem quote saying that “we’re linked, not ranked.”

“Pluribus” re-teamed Seehorn with showrunner Vince Gilligan, who previously worked together on “Better Call Saul.” That show earned Seehorn three Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, but the acclaimed show never won a single Emmy despite being hailed as one of the best shows of its time.

Gilligan wrote “Pluribus,” which stars Seehorn as an author who has to mount a resistance to an alien virus that merges everyone else’s consciousness into one collective unit, specifically for his friend and collaborator.

“There is something about Rhea Seehorn that puts her in a category all her own,” Gilligan wrote in his dedication to Seehorn when she received the Performance Award at the IndieWire Honors. “She can do it all. She can be as dramatic as all get out, but she’s also one of the funniest people I’ve ever met in my life. The full range is there, everything you’d ever want in a performer. But it’s more than skill. It’s her outlook. She has a work ethic like you can’t believe. She really wants to be the best artist she can be. She probably wouldn’t identify herself that way, but she is an artist through and through.”

At the IndieWire Honors, Seehorn devoted much of her acceptance speech to thanking the crew members who supported her on “Pluribus.”

“These performances, including the one that I’m being nominated for tonight, they don’t happen in a vacuum,” she said “The talent and the kindness and the support, the encouragement that I get on my sets is a massive part of how I do what I do, and how I get better every day, because I’m allowed to challenge myself, I’m allowed to take risks, I’m allowed to, you know, fall flat on my face, and try something, and so I just want to acknowledge those people.”

“Pluribus” has already been renewed for Season 2 by Apple TV.
