‘Hacks’ Season 5 Trailer: Deborah and Ava Get the Last Laugh in Final Season of Hit Comedy Series
The final season of the HBO Max hit arrives this April.
by Wilson Chapman · IndieWireDeborah Vance has had a legendary career — a long-running Las Vegas set, a nationwide tour, and a late night talk show. Now, “Hacks” is sending her back to where she began for her closing act. HBO Max has released the official trailer for the fifth and final season of the acclaimed comedy series, which sees Deborah and the show return to Las Vegas after relocating to Los Angeles for most of its run.
First released in 2021, “Hacks” stars four-time consecutive Emmy winner Jean Smart as Deborah, a seasoned stand-up comic clearly based partially on Joan Rivers. The show follows Deborah’s complicated relationship with her protege Ava (Hannah Einbender), a millennial comedy writer who initially teams up with Deborah to freshen up her Las Vegas act before eventually becoming a close friend and collaborator. Since its premiere, the show has received critical acclaim for Smart and Einbender’s performances, as well as its satirical look at the ins and outs of show business.
Season 4 of the show saw Deborah become the host of a late-night talk show, only to quit after being forced to bring on a movie star facing allegations of sexual misconduct as a guest. After several months spent performing at a Thailand casino to get around a non-compete contract, Deborah ended the season devastated to discover her death was falsely reported, with obituaries claiming she killed the late-night comedy genre. Season 5 picks up from there, with Deborah and Ava returning to Las Vegas to reignite their careers.
In addition to Smart and Einbender, “Hacks” also stars series creator Paul W. Downs, Megan Stalter, Carl Clemons-Hopkins, Mark Indelicato, and Rose Abdoo alongside recurring cast members Robby Hoffman, Tony Goldwyn, Kaitlin Olson, Christopher McDonald, Jane Adams, Lauren Weedman, Poppy Liu, Johnny Sibilly, Luenell, Angela E. Gibbs, and Caitlin Reilly. Season 5 will see “The Summer I Turned Pretty” star Christopher Briney join the cast in a guest-starring role.
Downs created and showruns the series with Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky. Downs and Aniello executive produce via their Paulilu banner and Statsky via First Thought Productions. Additional executive producers include Michael Schur via Fremulon, David Miner for 3 Arts Entertainment, Morgan Sackett, Joe Mande, Aisha Muharrar, Nate Young, and Ashley Glazier. The series is produced by Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group.
The 10-episode final season of “Hacks” premieres April 9. Watch the trailer for the season below.
