Paul Dano in Talks to Write and Direct Comedy from Producers The Daniels at Universal
The untitled film is being produced under Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan's deal with the studio as they work on their follow-up to "Everything Everywhere All At Once."
by Brian Welk · IndieWirePaul Dano is getting back in the director’s chair and will reunite with his “Swiss Army Man” collaborators Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (better known as The Daniels), an individual with knowledge of the project told IndieWire.
Dano is writing the script for an untitled comedy that will be set at Universal Pictures under The Daniels’ overall deal with the studio, and he’s also in talks to direct the film, which would be his sophomore feature and his first movie since 2018’s “Wildlife.”
Plot details are being kept under wraps for the film.
Daniel Kwan, Daniel Scheinert, and Jonathan Wang will produce through their Playgrounds banner via the overall deal with Universal Pictures. Dano is also in talks to produce.
The Daniels are currently working on their follow-up to their Best Picture-winning film “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” which is also still untitled but is set for a release date of July 12, 2026. Dano’s film is one of the only films they are solely meant to produce under their deal.
Dano was the star of 2016’s “Swiss Army Man,” the first feature directed by The Daniels and which premiered at Sundance in 2016, and it starred Dano as a man stranded on a deserted island who finds his way to safety thanks to the help of a farting corpse played by Daniel Radcliffe (and you thought hot dog fingers were weird).
Dano’s “Wildlife” in 2018 starred Carey Mulligan and Jake Gyllenhaal and was a coming-of-age story about a teenage boy grappling with his mother’s demeanor after their father abandons them to take a dangerous job. The movie was nominated for three Film Independent Spirit Awards.
Since then, Dano’s also acted in films like “The Batman,” “Dumb Money,” “Okja,” and Universal’s “The Fabelmans.” He’s also been busy on TV with projects like “Escape from Dannemora,” “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” and most recently “The Studio.”
Senior Executive Vice President of Production Development Erik Baiers will oversee the project for the studio.
Dano is represented by WME, Anonymous Content and Goodman, Genow, Schenkman, Smelkinson & Christopher. Daniels and Playgrounds are represented by Mosaic and Yorn, Levine, Barnes, Krintzman, Rubenstein, Kohner, Endlich, Goodell & Gellman. Wang is represented by Granderson Des Rochers.
