TIFF 2025 Adds Rian Johnson’s Third ‘Knives Out,’ Derek Cianfrance’s ‘Roofman,’ Chloé Zhao’s ‘Hamnet,’ and More
The festival has also added new films from Paul Greengrass, Agnieszka Holland, Clement Virgo, Rebecca Zlotowski, and more.
by Kate Erbland · IndieWireOK, OK, television fans, you had your day yesterday, with the announcement of the latest batch of Emmy nominations. Today? It’s back to film land, specifically when it comes to the rapidly approaching spate of fall festivals.
While the Toronto International Film Festival has already made quick work of announcing early picks for its selection, including Colin Hanks’ opening night documentary “John Candy: I Like Me,” plus new films from Steven Soderbergh, Nia DaCosta, Chandler Levack, Alejandro Amenábar, and Sung-hyun Byun, today the festival announced the addition of 11 more titles in the Gala and Special Presentations program.
And they include some biggies, like Rian Johnson’s “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery” (not only the third film in his beloved series, but the third one to celebrate its world premiere at TIFF), Derek Cianfrance’s fact-based Channing Tatum-starring “Roofman,” Chloé Zhao’s adaptation of “Hamnet,” Paul Greengrass’ harrowing true story “The Lost Bus,” and HIKARI’s intriguing-sounding “Rental Family.”
Those titles are also joined by Nicholas Hytner’s “The Choral,” Agnieszka Holland’s “Franz,” Neeraj Ghaywan’s “Homebound,” Rebecca Zlotowski’s “A Private Life,” Peter Ho-Sun Chan’s “She Has No Name,” and Clement Virgo’s “Steal Away.”
Of interest is the indication that Zhao’s film will celebrate its Canadian premiere at TIFF, hinting that it will world premiere at Venice (which will announce its lineup next week) and then go on to a North American premiere at Telluride. And both Neeraj Ghaywan’s “Homebound” and Rebecca Glotowski’s “A Private Life” will make their North American debuts after premiering at Cannes (and presumably skipping Telluride).
Per the fest, these films “[reflect] TIFF’s commitment to champion new perspectives and cinematic excellence to its diverse international public audience, these films … span multiple continents and storytelling traditions, representing the Festival’s international reach and curatorial inclusivity.”
Added Anita Lee, TIFF’s chief programming officer, in an official statement, “Since its inception, TIFF has championed global cinema that opens our eyes and brings us together. We are delighted to share 11 more titles from our Gala and Special Presentations programs that showcase the remarkable originality and excellence of today’s most exciting and acclaimed directors. These films reflect a sweeping range of voices and styles that embody the spirit of TIFF and our commitment to a public audience.”
