One more Gavin and Stacey show to air on New Year's Day after record-breaking Christmas Day special
by Sam Cooper, Fiona Callingham · NottinghamshireLiveOver 12 million Brits gathered around their televisions on Christmas Day to bid farewell to the much-loved sitcom Gavin and Stacey. However, this won't be the last time we see these beloved characters on our screens.
The BBC has announced a special one-off documentary airing on New Year's Day, titled A Fond Farewell. According to Radio Times, the programme will delve into the making of the final episode and the series as a whole.
Cast members will reminisce about the show's journey from start to finish. Show creators and stars Ruth Jones and James Corden, also known as Nessa and Smithy, will share insights into the birth and evolution of the iconic show.
Starting off as a small, relatively unknown comedy about a Welsh family and an Essex family on BBC Three in 2007, the show quickly gained a loyal fanbase, eventually moving to BBC One in later series. Certain characters and catchphrases became instant hits, cementing the show's enduring legacy.
Although the three-part series concluded in 2010, the cast returned for a highly anticipated Christmas special in 2019 that ended with a cliff-hanger. The most recent episode, which aired on Christmas Day this year, finally provided audiences with the closure they craved, wrapping up the storyline once and for all, reports Bristol Live.
In a new documentary, the cast and a host of celebrity guests will reflect on the impact of Gavin and Stacey on British television, highlighting their favourite lines and moments. The finale episode, which aired on Christmas Day, attracted approximately 12.3 million viewers - the largest Christmas Day audience in over a decade, according to the BBC.
This surpassed viewing figures for the new Wallace and Gromit film, watched by over nine million viewers, and the King's Christmas message, viewed by nearly seven million people. Gavin and Stacey: A Fond Farewell will be broadcast on January 1 at 7pm on BBC One and will also be available to stream on BBC iPlayer, where the 2024 Christmas special and all previous episodes can also be viewed.
