Gogglebox's Daniel Lustig has spoken out about his "devastating" split from fellow TV star Stephen Webb. On Best's Suddenly Single podcast, he confessed to turning to dating apps following their prolonged breakup, sparking worry among pals.
"For me, [the breakup] was traumatic and although I knew things weren't great, I didn't see it coming," shared Gogglebox star Daniel. He recounted how their relationship ended abruptly after a trip to South Africa: "We were going for a walk by the sea, and it was raining and he said 'I have to talk to you. We need to separate,' and it was awful ... it was very upsetting. Completely devastating."
At 49, Daniel remarked that they managed to maintain a degree of calm, with no dramatic exits: "It was quite a slow process because we were completely entwined for so long, with our businesses, the dogs... We were so close in everything we did."
This breakup was tougher than anything he'd experienced, describing it as akin to a marriage ending.
They've put their Brighton apartment up for sale, but until it is sold, they've opted for separate rooms—the change dictated after Stephen, 53, decided to join E4's Celebs Go Dating, reports the Liverpool Echo.
Meanwhile, Daniel eagerly plunged into the single life and explored numerous dating apps. Recounting his experience, he shared: "Once I got over the shock, in the Summer I was going on date after date, I was on apps all the time, and now I realise I was trying to fill a void. Friends took me aside to ask if I was OK."
Now, finding contentment in his independence, he remarks: "Now I'm happy being single. I love going on dates but I don't need a long term relationship."
Keen to avoid potential partners who might have known him when he was with Stephen, Daniel is expanding his search circle, revealing: "I put 60 miles away from Brighton, which gets me to London. Brighton's too small, I know lots of the people I would be dating."
His enthusiasm unmistakable, he concludes with a smile: "You get off the train in London and there are attractive men everywhere!"
