WB Games Shuts Down ‘F.E.A.R.’, ‘Condemned’ Developer Monolith Productions

The games industry has been hit with more developer closures, and much like what happened with Visceral Games back in 2017, this one hits horror fans. Per Bloomberg, Warner Bros. Games has reportedly shuttered Player First Games (the devs behind MultiVersus), WB San Diego, and F.E.A.R. and Condemned: Criminal Origins developer Monolith Productions.

“We have had to make some very difficult decisions to structure our development studios and investments around building the best games possible with our key franchises – Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC and Game of Thrones,” reads a statement from WB Games. “After careful consideration, we are closing three of our development studios – Monolith Productions, Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games San Diego. This is a strategic change in direction and not a reflection of these teams or the talent that consists within them.”

Prior to today’s announcement, Monolith was working on a Wonder Woman game, which has now been cancelled.

“The development of Monolith’s Wonder Woman videogame will not move forward. Our hope was to give players and fans the highest quality experience possible for the iconic character, and unfortunately this is no longer possible within our strategic priorities. This is another tough decision, as we recognize Monolith’s storied history of delivering epic fan experiences through amazing games.”

Monolith was founded in 1994, and gave gamers several memorable titles, both horror and non-horror . Their first developed game, the cult classic Blood, was released in 1997. Monolith followed that up with the sequel in 1998. The developer went on to create No One Lives Forever and Aliens Versus Predator 2, before returning to horror with the acclaimed titles F.E.A.R. and Condemned: Criminal Origins in 2005.

Earlier this year, MultiVersus was announced to be shutting down on May 30, with the final content pack having been released at the beginning of this month.

WB San Diego was a newer studio that was established in 2019 to focus on mobile, free-to-play games.
