‘Avengers: Endgame’ reclaims throne as top-grossing movie ever—surpasses ‘Avatar’

HOLLYWOOD - “Avengers: Endgame,” the blockbuster 2019 Marvel Cinematic Universe film, reclaimed its title as the highest-grossing movie of all time this weekend as a rerelease helped it surpass previous record-holder “Avatar.”

“Avengers: Endgame” has now grossed about $2.925 billion since it first hit theaters in 2019, Variety and Deadline reported Sunday morning, just edging out the $2.923 billion “Avatar” has grossed since its original 2009 release.

This weekend’s box office winner was “Verity,” the film adaptation of the Colleen Hoover novel starring Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson, which grossed $32 million in domestic theaters.

Behind “Verity” are holdovers from last week, including horror video game adaptation “Resident Evil” at No. 2, followed by “Heart of the Beast” and “Primetime.” “Digger,” the satirical comedy starring Tom Cruise as an oil executive, landed in fifth place in its opening weekend after collecting $8 million.
