Fortnite adds buildable Star Wars islands, so you can finally make a Mos Eisley Cantina full of flossing Jawas
Or a version of the battle of Hoth full of griddy-hitting Luke Skywalkers
· Rock Paper ShotgunFortnite's just gotten a new toolset that'll let folks build Star Wars-themed islands at the start of May, wich is good news for anyone who's ever craved the ability to create a map that somehow validates their Boba Fett and Chawbacca fanfiction.
Debuting today, March 19th these Star Wars tools include the means to set up lightsaber and blaster battles against the backdrop of planets like Hoth and Tatooine. Though, you'll have to wait until May 1st to publish any creations so folks can play them. Groups of props resembling the Death Star, Mos Eisley Cantina, and Rebel bases can be whipped out to fill the battlefield with stuff, and you can stick a Star Destroyer up in the sky if you fancy.
Then, you can stick in some characters like Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Darth Vader, plus enough Jawas or Stormtroopers to make sure those main folks aren't lonely. Then, everyone can have a big fight with a host of fitting weapons, including customisable lightsabers, as well as pilotable X-wings and TIE Fighters. You'll end up with something like a Lego Star Wars game, except with much more weird banana blokes and cringey dancing, and much less innate charm.
Speaking of less innate charm, Epic also say the tools come with a "narrative and roleplaying template", which allows you to jump into the cantina and set up a story using "NPC characters and new Conversation device functionality". Yeah, I think I'll pass on that.
Anyway, if you fancy giving these tools a go, you'll need to be enrolled in Epic's Fortnite Developer Program, and your island'll have to abide by a bunch of "STAR WARS™ Brand Rules".
Do not preach about sensitive topics, like political parties or religion," reads one of those rules. "Do not show Star Wars Assets with religious imagery or icons or in any uniform or alongside any flag or symbol that replicates a real world social, political or military group or institution, except to the extent Epic includes those assets within Fortnite or UEFN more generally. Do not use Star Wars Assets to support or make a statement regarding any social, political or religious organization, campaign or cause (e.g., whether regarding a candidate, a law or making a statement on an issue such as war, gun use, etc.)."
Damn, there goes my plan to make an island full of Jawas which uses the Tatooine scrap trade as a means to convince people through clever metaphors that every country in the world should offer a universal basic income.
