Ubisoft staff up for "captivating" Beyond Good & Evil 2 but we both know they're just going to hurt us again

Where's ma goddamn electric car, Yves

I'm distressed to report that Ubisoft are still making Beyond Good and Evil 2, which used to be the follow-up to a great open world Zelda-like game, but has evolved over 17 years of chaotic development into the concept of infinity.

Ubisoft Montpellier have posted a job listing for a technical sound designer, as noticed by Eurogamer, and on the pedestal these words appear: "Beyond Good & Evil 2 is an action-adventure open world game set in a captivating space opera universe and the direct prequel to the 2003 cult classic.

"Based on a breakthrough technology driven by the proprietary Voyager engine, Beyond Good & Evil 2 aims to offer a seamless experience of exploration and space piracy across a solar system full of exotic locations, colorful characters and mysteries to uncover, solo or with friends," it continues. "So, if you are ready for an adventure like no other, come join forces with us to build System 3!"

God, the blinding, scalding optimism of that closing phrase. That's the kind of faith that parts the Red Sea.

All snark aside, I am genuinely overjoyed that Beyond Good & Evil 2 still exists despite Ubisoft's recent restructuring, which has seen them carve out a Tencent-funded subsidiary to focus on Far Cry, Rainbow Six and Assassin's Creed, while cutting staff at studios working on other series. The original is one of my cherished childhood games, and the sequel/prequel appears indefatigable, however intangible. It survived a previous round of cuts in 2023. It has survived the untimely death of one director and the cloudy departure of the series creator.

If Ubisoft delays it for so long that the sun goes supernova and destroys the Earth, rest assured that visiting aliens from Alpha Centauri will find a LinkedIn posting for QA lead on Beyond Good and Evil 2 adrift in the rubble.
