It's still very much possible to make good Skyrim mods "without any use of AI" in 2026, declares the maker of a new DLC-sized Black Marsh expansion
King of the Murkmire offers a trip to the land of the Argonians
· Rock Paper ShotgunThe latest beefy expansion mod to hit Skyrim is an adventure to the Argonian homeland of Black Marsh, complete with hist trees and humid swamps. Though, its creator seems to be hoping the trip to the southern tip of the mysterious province will do more that just entertain, serving as a reminder that it's still possible for solo modders to make ambitious works happen for free without resorting to using generative AI.
"I did not make this mod to send a message, however I want to make a point with this release; good mods can still be made and released for free, and without any use of AI, in 2026, by a solo developer no less," modder Pancake0723 wrote in the description of their creation, King of the Murkmire. "This isn't meant as an attack, just to spark some thought." Given that GenAI's being used in various capacities as part of the process of making many of the Skyrim mods hitting Nexus Mods these days, it's certainly nice to see creators taking pride in having made something complex without leaning on the water-frying tech.
Released last week, the mod certainly looks to have been a serious undertaking for someone largely flying solo. Set in a Skyrim-era version of the Murkmire region of Black Marsh, an older (timeline-wise) iteration of which has been depicted in one of The Elder Scrolls Online's DLCs, it boasts 13 quests brought to life by over 1000 lines of human voice acted dialogue. Most of these will be dished out by the region's Saxhleel tribes, found in towns and villages like major port city Lilmoth - nicknamed the "Festering Jewel of Black Marsh".
In exploring the mod's version of Murkmire, you'll run across the likes of ancient stone temples called Xanmeer, "hist dungeons", plus ruins of both the Ayleid and Imperial varieties. Though, it's not a place you'll want to roam without having battle-tested your character first. "Black Marsh is home to an abundance of dangerous creatures and harsh diseases, both of which have been the bane of Imperial military advance in the past," Pancake0723 wrote. "This mod is not designed to be easy, you will get torn apart and you will succumb to deadly infections if you come at a low level and don't pack cure disease [potions]. There are two healers, in Lilmoth and Keeba Hollow, that can cure your diseases and you will find potions if you look in hidden places and loot. If you want an easy mode, Argonians are resistant to most diseases, but not all."
Interestingly given the setting, the modder notes they've not played the ESO DLC set in Murkmire and so have based the mod's version of it on the lore set out in classic in-game book series The Argonian Account and articles on ever-useful fan-run wiki The Unofficial Elder Scrolls Pages, as well as watching a YouTuber play through the ESO expansion. They've also only decided to only depict part of the Murkmire region, in order to "stress that much of the region is unexplored by outsiders and entirely unknown" and "to preserve written lore" it sounds like the mod may not have been able to do justice.
If you fancy giving King of the Murkmire a go, you'll need to grab the main file and LOD file from its page, unless you plan to generate the latter yourself using a tool like DynDOLOD. Bethesda's free Fishing, Rare Curios, and Saints and Seducers creations are requirements, as are the contents of the _ResourcePack.bsa file the studio bundled in with Skyrim's special and anniversary editions. There are a bunch of optional files which make the mod play well with others Pancake0723 that recommends grabbing too, in order to ensure the experience lives up to their specific vision. To head off to Black Marsh once you're all set, seek out a ship called the Lady Padomay near the sawmill just south of Solitude's docks.
