A year ago, a grand celebration in Mumbai transformed into a cultural moment that reverberated across continents. The wedding of Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant on July 12, 2024, wasn’t just a private affair — it was a spectacle that blended tradition with glamour and drew global admiration for its scale, symbolism, and sheer opulence.
A Celebration That Defined a Generation
Held at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai, the nuptials between Anant — the youngest son of industrialists Mukesh and Nita Ambani — and Radhika Merchant — the daughter of Viren and Shaila Merchant — brought together the who’s who of Indian and international society. Stars, statesmen, and royalty gathered under one roof, echoing the grandeur of a royal celebration.
Among the notable guests were Bollywood’s elite — Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, and Priyanka Chopra — as well as global personalities like Kim and Khloe Kardashian, John Kerry, Tony Blair, and Boris Johnson. Their presence highlighted how the event transcended cultural boundaries and established a new benchmark for global celebrity gatherings in India.
Flavours of Banaras on a Mumbai Plate
Beyond the glitz, the wedding also paid tribute to India’s rich culinary heritage. One of the standout elements was the inclusion of street food from Varanasi’s renowned Kaashi Chaat Bhandaar. A special selection of chaats — personally curated by Nita Ambani during a visit to the holy city — became one of the talking points of the celebrations.
“Nita Ambani came to our chaat bhandaar on June 24, where she tasted tikki chaat, tomato chaat, palak chaat, and kulfi falooda. She was very happy and said that the chaat of Banaras is very famous. It was a pleasure to serve her,” said shop owner Rakesh Keshari, speaking to ANI.
The menu included beloved dishes like tamatar chaat, chana kachori, palak chaat, kulfi falooda, and dahi puri, offering a blend of nostalgia and indulgence for the wedding guests.
A Feel-Good Milestone, A Cultural Legacy
Described by many as “India’s own royal wedding,” the Anant-Radhika union was more than a lavish affair. It was a reflection of India’s ability to fuse modern global appeal with deeply rooted traditions. The New York Times remarked that the event had introduced “the world to [India]’s Gilded Age,” encapsulating how such moments define national identity on a global stage.
As the couple celebrates their first anniversary, what remains is not just the memory of opulence, but the joy, colour, and cultural pride the wedding radiated — a lasting legacy that turned one wedding into a moment of collective celebration.
