Metro... In Dino review: “Why don’t they make films like they used to - the ones that linger in your heart, that heal your soul, that you remember even years down the line?” If you’ve ever asked this question, Anurag Basu might have just answered it with 'Metro... In Dino'. This isn’t just a film, it’s a masterstroke of storytelling that comforts, connects and quietly transforms. With tender performances, a poignant narrative, and soul-stirring music, Basu’s latest is a reminder that cinema can still feel personal and profound.

Metro... In Dino: Web of stories, all too real

Basu weaves together multiple narratives, each one mirroring the emotional dilemmas of modern-day relationships across age groups. There’s Pankaj Tripathi and Konkona Sen Sharma, a married couple stuck in the rut of routine. Their teenage daughter, meanwhile, is on her own journey of self-discovery, trying to understand her sexuality.

Ali Fazal and Fatima Sana Shaikh play a couple trying to balance love and ambition in a long-distance relationship. Aditya Roy Kapur, a free-spirited man, crosses paths with Sara Ali Khan, who is already nursing the wounds of a past love. Neena Gupta, who plays the mother to Konkona and Sara, is navigating a difficult marriage and unexpectedly reconnects with a school friend played by Anupam Kher.

These stories don't just unfold on screen, they mirror your own. You’ll see fragments of your life, your parents’ struggles, or your friends’ dilemmas in each of these arcs. It’s cinema as a mirror, reflecting the subtle cracks and silent hopes of human connections.

How is Metro... In Dino?

'Metro... In Dino' doesn’t preach. It understands. It doesn’t spotlight the problems, it gently nudges you toward the solutions. The first half is deeply engrossing, brimming with emotional depth, while the second half, although slightly less impactful, still holds its ground with finesse.

What sets the film apart is how seamlessly it blends its storylines, like verses of a Gulzar poem or lines from a Javed Akhtar ghazal. Each thread feels intentional, lyrical, and lovingly placed. Pritam’s music adds a breeze of freshness, enhancing the mood without ever feeling forced. The soundtrack is not a break from the story — it’s a part of its soul.

Performances that speak without shouting

Every actor in this film has delivered an outstanding performance. Pankaj Tripathi is an absolute delight to watch — especially in the role of a cheating husband, which he plays with amusing charm. Konkona Sen Sharma is exceptional as always and looks stunning on screen. Neena Gupta once again surprises with her natural flair, while Anupam Kher, as expected, never falters.

Aditya Roy Kapur is perfectly cast as a carefree, easygoing young man — the role fits him like a glove, and he brings it to life effortlessly. Sara Ali Khan portrays the struggles of a modern woman with remarkable honesty — a character whose boss harasses her while her boyfriend fails to support her. Sara performs it all with a very natural ease.

Ali Fazal seems born for his role — as a struggling singer, he delivers a compelling performance. Fatima Sana Shaikh shines as a modern woman torn between her career and her relationship. Shashwat Chatterjee is impressive, Rohan Gurbaxani does well, and Kush Jotwani leaves a mark too. Even the child actors have done a commendable job.

All in all, every actor brings something special to their role, making the ensemble cast one of the film’s strongest assets.

Anurag Basu: The real hero

At the heart of it all is Anurag Basu’s vision, empathetic, layered, and heartbreakingly beautiful. Only Basu could have told these stories with such grace and restraint. His direction gives each story the space to breathe, while still tying them together with an invisible thread of hope and healing. This is a film that belongs in archives — a timeless piece that will age beautifully.

Music that lingers

Pritam’s music deserves special mention. Each song is woven into the narrative so organically that it feels like an extension of the characters’ emotions. It's rare to see music becoming a part of the screenplay, and here, it's done with commendable skill.

Final verdict

'Metro... In Dino' is not just a film, it’s an emotional experience — one that soothes, surprises, and stays with you. Don’t wait to hear what others think. Watch it yourself, and you’ll walk away with a full heart and perhaps, a little more clarity about your own relationships.
