Aankhon Ki Gustakhiyan review: Not all films are made for mass applause, some arrive quietly, get critiqued or dismissed, and years later find a second life in retrospection. 'Aankhon Ki Gustakhiyan' feels like one of those films. It may not win everyone over today, but it will undoubtedly resonate with a few deeply. It’s not a masterpiece, nor does it deserve to be trolled—it simply asks for a bit of empathy and imagination from its audience.
Aankhon Ki Gustakhiyan plot
Inspired by Ruskin Bond’s short story 'The Eyes Have It', the film centres around an aspiring actress (played by Shanaya Kapoor), who prepares to play a blind woman by blindfolding herself to understand the experience. During this time, she meets a young man (Vikrant Massey), who offers to help her. She believes he can see, but in reality, he too is visually impaired. How their bond develops, and how this layered deception turns into an unlikely love story, forms the crux of the film.
How is Aankhon Ki Gustakhiyan
'Aankhon Ki Gustakhiyan' is far from perfect, but it does try something different, something not often seen in mainstream romantic cinema. Yes, the premise may seem hard to digest for some, and that’s fair. But isn't cinema supposed to push boundaries, challenge perception, and offer something new? While we often complain that nothing fresh is being made, when it does arrive, we meet it with disbelief.
The cinematography is gorgeous, locations are captured with grace, adding an almost poetic touch to the narrative. There are light-hearted moments and comic relief sprinkled in, which help break the emotional heaviness. The film rests entirely on its two lead characters, and it's fascinating to watch how they carry the story almost entirely on their shoulders.
The screenplay, however, could have been tighter. A dash of dramatic flair or emotional high points might have helped connect better with audiences used to high-octane storytelling. As it stands, this one will appeal to viewers who enjoy quieter, more intimate stories.
Performances
Vikrant Massey is the backbone of the film. He brings sincerity, restraint, and vulnerability to his role—exactly what's needed in a story like this. He is easily the film’s strongest reason to watch.
Shanaya Kapoor makes an assured debut. Her screen presence is charming, she looks confident, and while her performance isn’t flawless, it holds promise. There’s room to grow, and she shows enough spark to make us believe she will.
Sanand Verma adds a fresh comic layer with his usual flair, and Zain Khan Durrani impresses in his brief appearance.
Writing & direction
The story is written by Mansi Bagla and directed by Santosh Singh. The intention is admirable, and the direction handles the sensitive subject with dignity. However, the writing falters a bit when it comes to pacing and emotional payoff. A more engaging screenplay could have elevated the film significantly. Still, Singh’s direction ensures the film never loses its emotional core.
Verdict
'Aankhon Ki Gustakhiyan' isn’t for everyone, and that’s okay. It’s not trying to be a crowd-pleaser. It’s a soft, sincere attempt at exploring love through the lens of perception and vulnerability. It stumbles, but never falls flat.
If you’re someone who enjoys thoughtful, non-violent storytelling that doesn’t scream for your attention but quietly asks for it—this might just touch you.
