The latest PlayStation State of Play event finally pulled the curtains back on 007 First Light, IO Interactive’s long-awaited James Bond origin game. Slated for a 2026 release, the cinematic trailer gave fans a glimpse of a younger, edgier Bond — far removed from the suave veteran we’re used to.
This James Bond is just 26, still raw and rugged around the edges, and freshly recruited into MI6 after a stint with the Royal Navy. Before that? A childhood tragedy left him orphaned at age 11, bouncing between British boarding schools before the world of espionage came calling.
Watch the first trailer below:
The game’s narrative promises a globe-trotting, story-rich adventure that allows players to choose their approach — guns blazing or smooth-talking subterfuge. And yes, IO Interactive hasn’t forgotten its Hitman roots; disguises, gadgets, and silent takedowns are all in play.
Lennie James Joins the Mission as Bond’s Mentor
In a standout casting reveal, The Walking Dead star Lennie James will voice and portray John Greenway, Bond’s mentor at MI6. In the trailer, Greenway warns of the threat ahead: “009 is a master manipulator. Whatever the endgame is, we won't see it coming.”
Greenway serves as Bond’s guide through the early chaos, helping him navigate both missions and moral dilemmas. James' gravitas adds depth to the emotional core of this prequel, promising more than just bullets and bravado.
Classic Characters, Fresh Faces, and Q’s Annoyance
Long-time Bond fans will spot reimagined versions of MI6 stalwarts — M, Q, and Moneypenny — alongside familiar gadgets (yes, the Omega watch makes a comeback). The trailer teases a cheeky moment with Q already irritated by Bond’s mischief in the lab.
True to franchise form, 007 First Light doesn’t just lean on nostalgia — it reloads it. The game lets players shape Bond's persona, whether by fighting fists-first or flirting through danger.
A New Trilogy in the Making?
IO Interactive first announced its Bond ambitions back in 2020 under the name Project 007. Unlike previous Bond games or films, 007 First Light isn’t based on any specific adaptation — it’s an entirely original take on the origin of the world’s most famous spy.
According to IO Interactive CEO Hakan Abrak, First Light might just be the start of something bigger. A full trilogy is reportedly on the table. The studio’s famed Hitman series is currently on hiatus as IO throws all its firepower behind Bond.
And there's more: alongside PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, the game is also coming to the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.
So, mark 2026 — because Bond is back. Only this time, he’s not seasoned. He’s just getting started.
