‘A Minecraft Movie’ Projected To Haul In Big Box Office Gold This Weekend
by Tim Lammers · ForbesJack Black and Jason Momoa’s A Minecraft Movie is expected to bring big audiences back into the theater again after Snow White bombed at the box office.
Snow White, of course, earned far less than early projections in its opening weekend with a $42.2 million take from 4,200 North American theaters and tumbled 66% in its second frame with a $14.3 million tally.
As such, the $40 million-budgeted Jason Statham crime thriller A Working Man knocked Snow White off its box office perch after one week to take the domestic crown last weekend with $15.5 million.
Warner Bros. is estimating (via Deadline) that A Minecraft Movie will earn $65 million in its opening weekend from 4,263 North American theaters, as well as $65 million in international ticket sales. The big advantage going into the weekend for A Minecraft Movie is that it’s an adaptation of the biggest video game of all time.
If both of Warner Bros.’ estimates hold, it would yield a $130 million worldwide tally in its first Friday to Sunday frame. Deadline, however, projects a stronger international take for A Minecraft Movie and is pegging the film to open with $140 million in global ticket sales.

The trade publication noted that A Minecraft Movie had a $150 million production budget before prints and advertising costs. By contrast, Disney’s Snow White had a $270 million budget before P&A and earned $87.3 million worldwide in its first three days in theaters.
While it seems like an apples to oranges comparison because Snow White and A Minecraft Movie are aimed at different demos, both films are rated PG.
Box Officer Tracker Believes ‘A Minecraft Movie’ Could Reach $100 Million In Its Domestic Opening
As robust as Deadline’s projection for the opening weekend of A Minecraft Movie is, box office tracker Box Office Pro is estimating an even bigger weekend for the family adventure comedy. As of Wednesday, Box Office Pro’s tracking suggested that A Minecraft Movie could open anywhere between $85 million to $100 million domestically this weekend.
Apart from the holdovers Snow White, A Working Man and The Chosen: The Last Supper Part 1, A Minecraft Movie is facing little competition from other movies in itis opening weekend.
Distributed by Fathom Events, The Chosen: The Last Supper Part 2 is opening in 2,000 North American venues this weekend, while indie distributor Neon is releasing the horror comedy Hell of a Summer in 1,250 theaters domestically.
Hell of a Summer — which stars Stranger Things standout Finn Wolfhard — is looking at $1 million in in domestic ticket sales its opening frame, Deadline projects. While the trade publication didn’t have an opening weekend projection for The Chosen: The Last Supper Part 2, Box Office Pro estimated that the film would open in the $10 million to $12 million range.
