NYT ‘Strands’ Today: Hints, Spangram And Answers For Wednesday, January 15th

This has been a bit of a disappointing week for Strands. I don’t think we’ve had one truly challenging puzzle since I’ve been back in the guide chair. Not one! Today’s is no exception, though a couple of the words were a bit on the trickier side. Oh well, you can’t always get what you want, as the old song reminds us. Let’s uncover some words!

Strands is the newest game in the New York Times’ stable of puzzle games. It’s a fun twist on classic word search games. Every day we’re given a new theme and then tasked with uncovering all the words on the grid that fit that theme, including a spangram that spans two sides of the board. One of these words is the spangram which crosses from one side of the grid to another and reveals even more about the day’s theme.

Today’s Strands Breakdown

This one was a little trickier than the past few days partly because there were just so many words in this grid to uncover. It was also a bit tricky because I had no idea there were such things as BALEEN whales or RIGHT whales. I actually found WHALES first—the theme was pretty obvious—and from there most of the whale species I did know were pretty obvious, though it took until the very end for me to find HUMPBACK.
