Mumbai: Legendary actor Dharmendra passed away in Mumbai at the age of 89, just days before his 90th birthday. The actor, who had been admitted to Breach Candy Hospital earlier this month and later discharged, was reportedly recuperating. However, on November 24, an ambulance was seen leaving his residence, and several celebrities arrived at the Juhu crematorium. While his family has not issued a formal confirmation, filmmaker Karan Johar publicly announced the news.

Dharmendra, known as Bollywood’s ‘He-Man’, leaves behind a towering legacy spanning over six decades and more than 300 films. The cause of death has not yet been disclosed, though he had been unwell since his hospital admission on November 1. His final film will be Sriram Raghavan’s Ikkis, also starring Agastya Nanda and Jaideep Ahlawat, slated for release on December 25, 2025.

Tributes poured in from across the industry, with Amitabh Bachchan’s family, Aamir Khan, and Salman Khan paying their last respects. Karan Johar, in an emotional post, called Dharmendra the end of an era and a “bonafide legend of Indian cinema,” praising his screen presence, warmth, and humanity. Johar said the industry now faces an irreplaceable void, writing that the heavens are blessed to receive him.

Dharmendra’s career showcased unmatched versatility — from romantic leads in Phool Aur Patthar and Aaye Din Bahar Ke to rugged action roles in Dharam Veer and Hukumat. His portrayal of Veeru in the 1975 classic Sholay remains one of Indian cinema’s most beloved performances. Even in recent years, he charmed audiences in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (2023) and Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya (2024).

Born Dharmendra Kewal Krishan Deol on December 8, 1935, in Punjab’s Nasrali village, he began his film career in 1960 with Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere. His good looks, natural charisma and ease across genres helped him rise rapidly. He was honoured with the Padma Bhushan in 2012.

Dharmendra is survived by his wives Prakash Kaur and Hema Malini, and his six children — Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Vijeta, Ajeeta, Esha Deol and Ahana Deol. (Agencies)
