A MAN who “transformed his passion into something that benefits the whole Island” has been nominated for Volunteer/Fundraiser of the Year for raising £25,000 in charitable funds through a miniature railway in his garden.
Curtis Stanier’s nominator Nicolle Maltwood explained how her friend created the HSBA Garden Railway for his own enjoyment before realising how much other people loved visiting.
This led Mr Stanier to open his own back garden to the public through a series of open days, while raising money for various local charities along the way.
The St Mary site features trains that are 4% of the real size and navigate over 138m of track through tunnels, over bridges and past a pond.
Miss Maltwood said: “What makes Curtis so special is that everything he does is driven by generosity.
“He gives up so much his time, welcomes hundreds of visitors into his home, and continually looks for new ways to make each event bigger and better.
“His enthusiasm is infectious, and people return year after year, knowing they are supporting worthwhile local causes while enjoying a truly unique experience.”
Miss Maltwood said that Mr Stanier has raised more than £25,000 for local charities to date, which she described as an “incredible achievement from what began as a personal hobby”.
“Curtis’s selflessness, dedication and commitment to helping others make him an outstanding and truly inspirational choice for Fundraiser of the Year,” she added.
