Article Summary
- Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice features time-travel chaos, a crime plot, and a messy love triangle.
- The film focuses on emotional closure, with its ending built to feel self-contained despite open possibilities.
- Director BenDavid Grabinski is not planning a sequel, saying the story works best as a standalone experience.
- Vince Vaughn stars as both Present Nick and Future Nick, bringing wild, escalating energy to the movie.
Vince Vaughn's new movie is a chaotic time-travel crime comedy that keeps changing lanes on purpose. But at its core, the film follows two gangsters, Nick and his right-hand man Mike, on what should be a standard, dangerous night, until a time machine gets dropped into the middle of their mess. From there, the story becomes a scramble to keep everyone alive while jealousy, bad timing, and a very specific love triangle keep the situation from getting any better. And throughout, a big part of the fun is how the story keeps escalating without over-explaining the sci-fi.
Here, Vaughn plays both Present Nick and Future Nick, and the second version's appearance brings the film's penchant for pure chaos to the fore. But before we go any further, consider this your official spoiler warning for the film's ending.
Now that you've been warned, the film's final stretch eventually turns into a big, violent clean-up where present Nick ends up making the kind of sacrificial choice that gives the story its emotional payoff, and the movie closes on the sense that Mike and Alice still have a path forward to set things right. However, it also leaves you with enough information to understand what they want to do next, without turning the ending into a hard stop. Apparently, that is also part of why writer-director BenDavid Grabinski has been quick to cool down sequel expectations, even though the premise seems built for another round.
Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice Director on a Potential Sequel
In his interview with SlashFilm, he discussed the sequel topic and said, "To me, it has to be self-contained," explaining that he put everything into making this movie work on its own, and that thinking about a follow-up could "undercut what happens." He added, "I think you see everything you need to see to know that somehow Mike is going to fix things," and said the emotional closure is the point. At the same time, he left a small door open, saying he could wake up one day with an idea he really liked, even though he "wasn't really thinking more than a foot in front of my face this entire time."
The film stars Vaughn, James Marsden, and Eiza González, with Keith David and Jimmy Tatro among the supporting standouts. Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice made its premiere at SXSW on March 14, 2026, and started streaming March 27 on Hulu and Disney+.
