When it was first revealed that Chris Pratt would be voicing Mario in Illumination's theatrical adaptation, a lot of fans did a double-take. Mario's voice is one of those instantly recognizable parts of gaming culture, and Pratt is not exactly who most people picture when they think of the character. Even so, the 2023 film largely made the gamble work, helped by a cast that clicked in unexpected ways, and it became a true crowd-pleaser. The Super Mario Bros. Movie even finished its box office run with about $1.36 billion worldwide, making it one of the biggest hits of the decade and a clear sign that Nintendo and Illumination had found a formula audiences would show up for.

With the sequel, the studio is now leaning into bigger spectacle and a broader slice of Mario history, which also means Pratt is back in that same balancing act with the iconic character's voice. In fact, he is still dealing with the small, specific challenge of playing a character audiences have heard for decades, and he recently singled out one line that remains weirdly tricky to nail.

The "Mamma Mia" Line is Difficult for Chris Pratt in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

In an interview, he explained that "Mamma Mia" is a tough one for him because the classic delivery is Italian and high-pitched, and he keeps asking himself, "Why does it make sense for a guy who's from Brooklyn who doesn't have that accent to use that so much?" He said the phrase is still in the script, adding, "It's written as 'Mamma Mia,'" but "it's always really hard to find how 'Mamma Mia' works," so he has tried to vary it, even joking that they may have slowed it down "to take some of the stink off it" as he kept searching for a version that felt right.

As for who is in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, the core cast is all back. Pratt voices Mario, Charlie Day returns as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy is Princess Peach, Jack Black is Bowser, and Keegan-Michael Key is Toad. The new additions include Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr., Donald Glover as Yoshi, and Brie Larson as Rosalina, with Issa Rae, Luis Guzmán, and Kevin Michael Richardson also joining the voice lineup.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie arrived in theaters on April 1st from Illumination and Universal Pictures.
