PlaySide announces War for Westeros, a Game of Thrones RTS

PlaySide Studios and Warner Bros announced Game of Thrones: War for Westeros, a real-time strategy title based on the well-known fantasy IP from George R. R. Martin. As the title suggests, the game is set in the world of Westeros, and players take control of various factions, including Houses Stark, Lannister and Targaryen and the enemy faction the White Walkers. War for Westeros launches globally on PC in 2026.

Players deploy their factions in free-for-all battles supplemented by diplomacy, alliances and deception. Each faction comes with its own heroes and strategic powers, presumably including familiar faces from the books and show adaptation — the Night King, Jon Snow, Jaime Lannister and Daenerys Targaryen’s dragons feature in the cinematic trailer. The game includes skirmish matches as well as a grander war that can be played alone or in co-op.

The marketing, including the trailer, seem to draw on the well-known fan discontent with the show’s ending. PlaySide invites players to “re-envision the most iconic battles and turning points from the Game of Thrones series,” with the trailer showing the Night King killing and resurrecting hero Jon Snow. They can alter these outcomes by deploying a variety of troops, including cavalry, siege engines, giants and dragons.

Ryan McMahon, PlaySide game director, said in a statement, “Game of Thrones: War for Westeros takes fans back to the Seven Kingdoms. This time, you’re not watching the Game of Thrones – you’re playing it. War for Westeros puts you in the seat of power, whether you’re leading the Starks, Targaryens, or Lannisters, or even commanding the Night King and his army of the dead, you’ll wield real power and rewrite the fate of the realm.”
