Nintendo reveals Mario Kart World, a launch title for the Switch 2

by · VentureBeat

Nintendo today held its big Direct revealing more information about its upcoming console, the Switch 2, and the very first thing it showed off was a new Mario Kart title. Called Mario Kart World, the new game is exclusive to Switch 2 and features several changes from the rest of the series. It launches on the same day as the Switch 2.

The most notable difference between Mario Kart World and previous Mario Kart titles is the massive open world. Rather than restricting players to a series of tracks, World puts the tracks within the open world and allows players to freely traverse it between them. They can go off-world, take leisurely drives to enjoy the scenery and take photos. The world will feature a day/night cycle and changing weather, all of which change the world.

The tracks themselves will host races with up to 24 competitors, and players can also ride rails by getting up on two wheels. Mario Kart World features Grand Prix races as well as a Knockout Tour where you race around the open world and will be eliminated if you’re too low-ranked.

Nintendo plans to reveal more details about World at a special Direct on April 17. The game retails for $80 for the digital edition, and Nintendo is also releasing a bundled version of the Switch 2 with the game included for a limited time through fall.
