Ryan Reynolds Is Writing DEADPOOOL 4 but Calls Wade WIlson “a Supporting Character” in the Story
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantAfter the massive success of Deadpool and Wolverine, it’s only a matter of time before we see the Merc with a Mouth back in action. But, if you’re expecting another solo spotlight for Wade Wilson, you might want to adjust those expectations a bit.
Ryan Reynolds recently opened up about where things stand with a potential fourth film, and it sounds like the early gears are already turning.
"I have some stuff kind of written," Reynolds said in an interview with Today, which is enough to get fans paying attention, especially after the last movie shattered expectations at the box office.
What’s more interesting is the direction he’s hinting at. "I think he’s a supporting character. He’s a guy that is great in a group," Reynolds added. This interesting shift for the character is something he has shared before.
Reynolds “was adamant he wouldn’t be doing a solo Deadpool movie following 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine.” The plan reportedly centers on a movie that includes “three or four” X-Men characters, while letting Deadpool stir the pot from the sidelines.
Reynolds first stepped into the role in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, though that version didn’t exactly win fans over. Everything changed with 2016’s Deadpool, where the character finally clicked, followed by Deadpool 2 in 2018.
Then came 2024’s Deadpool and Wolverine, which teamed him up with Hugh Jackman’s iconic mutant for a multiversal adventure involving Cassandra Nova, the twisted sister of Charles Xavier.
That film didn’t just perform well, it dominated. Pulling in over $1.3 billion worldwide, it became the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever made. It also officially brought Deadpool into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, opening the door for all kinds of future appearances.
Even if Deadpool 4 shifts focus away from Wade as the lead, that doesn’t mean he’s disappearing. There are reports that he’s set to show up in Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars, though nothing has been confirmed by Marvel Studios just yet.
As for what a fourth film could look like, the possibilities are wide open. With Deadpool now mingling with the MCU crowd, a team-up story feels like the natural next step.
Whether that means joining forces with the Fantastic Four, linking up with a version of the New Avengers, or even dropping in on a new generation of mutants in an upcoming X-Men reboot, there’s a lot of room to play.
Deadpool has always thrived when bouncing off other characters, so putting him in a supporting role might actually play to his strengths. Some reports say that this next project could be more of an X-Force movie.
For now, everything is still in early development, so there’s no timeline on when Deadpool 4 will hit theaters. But, it’s been rumored to be the first film released after Secret Wars, which will be released in 2027.
